The ABCs of Sorority Life

 

  • A (AKA)-Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908.
  • B (Butler)- Butler University was the founding location of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on November 12,1922.
  • C(Chapter)- Chapter Meetings allow for active members to discuss the current chapter operations and ensure alignment with corporate initiatives
  • D (DST) Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913.
  • E (Environment)- Enhancing the environment is one of the key initiatives of the 2023 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc leadership team. The initiative draws attention to the following areas: tree planting, community and home gardens, waste reduction, and shredding and electronics recycling days.
  • F (Financial)- Financial capacity is essential in maintaining active membership within a respective sorority. There are reoccurring fees for sorority dues, conferences, travel, and support of sorority initiatives.
  • G (Graduate )- Graduate Chapters are for members that have a bachelor or advanced degree(s) from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • H (Homecoming)- Homecoming is the time of year where many Greeks return to their alma mater to celebrate the institution they graduated from.
  • I (Inactive)- An inactive member is not currently active in their sorority as outlined by a sorority’s by-laws and other governing documents.
  • J (Joy)- Joy -Ann Reid is an honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,Inc. Honorary Membership is the highest honor extended to women who have made significant contributions to society while excelling in their chosen fields.
  • K (Key)- A Key distinction of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is they are the only one  to founded at a predominantly white institution.
  • L (Legacy)- Legacy is defined as the daughter or granddaughter (biological or adopted), of an active or deceased Member.
  • M (Membership)- Membership eligibility can be reviewed on each corporate website.
  • N  (NPHC)- The purpose of the National Pan-Hellenic Council is to foster cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern.
  • O (Opened)- In 1963, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Opened Mary Help of the Sick Mission Hospital (formerly Thika Maternity Hospital) in Thika, Kenya
  • P (Phi)- Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated is the only fraternity constitutionally bound to a sorority. That sorority is Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
  • Q (Quander)- Nellie M. Quander led the effort to incorporate Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to maintain perpetuity on January 29, 1913.
  • R (Region)- Sorority chapters are often categorized into geographical regions.
  • S (Sisterhood)-Sisterhood is one of the core values of every sorority.
  • T (Tradition)-The rich traditions of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. , and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. have lasted over 100 plus years.
  • U (Undergraduate)- Undergraduate membership is defined by women who are currently attending/enrolled at a four-year accredited college or university.
  • V(Voting)- Voting  procedures during business chapter meetings follow Robert’s rule of order.
  • W (Women’s Wellness)- Women’s wellness is one of the key initiatives of the 2023 Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. , Inc leadership team. This initiative provides attention to health issues that impact women, specifically women of color.
  • X (XOXO)- We XOXO Sisterhood across all sororities!
  • Y (Years)- Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. celebrated 100 years of sisterhood in 2022. #centennialcelebrations
  • Z (Zeta)-Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on on January 16, 1920.
