B.L.O.O.M: Pledging in Black Sororities #BecomeAMember

Joining a sorority is more than just being able to wear the letters of that organization or attending all of the social events. You have an opportunity to become a part of something larger than yourself as you commit to upholding the values and legacy set forth by the founders. It is for that reason, sororities are very selective on the members they grant membership to. 

Though the selection process may seem a bit scary, it’s okay you aren’t in it alone! It may help to think of sororities as a huge garden. Many gardens are full of gorgeous flowers that all have their own unique characteristics which make that garden unique. You are meant to share your uniqueness with the world and as you begin the sorority process, remember to B. L.O.O.M.  as you find your place in the garden and look for membership:

B- Breathe: There is no one that can be the amazing woman that you are, so in your preparation hold on to your true essence. Breathe in the affirmation your individuality is enough. Breathe out any doubts that require you to shrink yourself. Here are three affirmations for you to remember:

I am enough 

I let go of my anxious thoughts 

I am a beautiful person

L- Learn: Learn as much as you can about the organization. You can learn through visiting the corporate website of the sorority, attending local sorority events, and interviewing existing members. You can use these key questions to support having some girl chat:

Why did you join that sorority?

How did you find out which areas you wanted to working within the sorority (ie. Committees)

What advice would you offer a prospective member?

OO-Operate in Openness: As you go through the sorority process you are going to meet women from all walks of life. And it is in operating in openness with one another that we are able to learn from each other’s experiences. As you embrace this shared space of openness, you create a unique opportunity to:

Build a Relationship With a New Friend 

Gain a Different Perspective 

Create a Safe Space for Open Dialogue 

 M- Manage: How you manage your time and financial resources will be crucial as you begin the initiation process if selected. You need to align your schedule to have balance where you can be fully present during initiation and post initiation due to all of the activities. It will also require financial support and you have to ensure you have the financial means to maintain your membership. In order to manage your time and resources, don’t forget to:

Grab a Calendar to support organizing all of your events 

Write out all the sorority activities that require a financial commitment 

Start a budget that will allow you to save consistently for activities
